We interview Dave Bailey, Manager of the Bolton Wanderers Football Club International Soccer School about the Football Studies Programme and how the boys are getting on with life in Bolton.

Q. We’ve seen a mixed week overall with both A and B Teams playing games.

A. Yes definately, but pleasing in many aspects.

Q. Let’s start with the B Team.

A. Ok, they had a good week in regards to training and other aspects but played against Everton development team and lost 6-3. But in all fairness, Craig told me they were down 5-0 within no time and only then did they begin to play. It was made more mentally difficult for the lads also as one minute the game is on then off then back on, but still no one’s fault at least they got a run out. The B Team also had a few boys move up to play for the A Team, so up against it but well done for their desire to not give up and attitude to change.

Q. What about the A Team?

A. It has been a big week for them with a game against Preston North End a Championship side to who we have had 5 boys offered the opportunity to train with their main Centre of Excellence Team. On top of that they are very excited about one or two especially but in fairness I am not going to say who at this stage as I don’t want to add to the pressure but we will work together to give those boys a chance to play full time over here.

The match itself was a good football game, James had prepared the team well. I felt with our boys been a little older and stronger this gave us a slight advantage which told in certain areas of the game. Both teams played the game in the right sprit throughout and there was no fear of failure which is just to common, the coaches encouraged the players and this added to as I said it was a great game of football. I need to mention Roman who was outstanding with Meni , Ryan and Naz also playing very well, but well done to all the boys who took part well played.

Q. We have not had chance to ask about the boy who came in to the BWFC Reserves Training, how did he do?

A. He did ok but in fairness it was difficult to come into train and then play a game against Celtic (Scottish Premier League Side) U19s, they played very well and their desire to close down and win the ball early was too much. BWFC had some boys been rested for the Reserves League Fixture the following day so a young squad faced a hard battle. In fairness to Celtic they played some great football at times but were just stronger physically on the day, for our guy it was just too quick and the pace to much for him. We have one or two other Professional Teams interested but for now it is a test of character as to his attitude and how he deals with what is for some of these boys a first taste of any negative comments about them. I have to say what an experience for the boy and opportunity, a lifetime chance that will be with him forever!

Q. You had Jon over from your international gateway partners EDU Kick, what was his thoughts?

A. Yes Jon was over he spent a few days taking in what the programme was about and how the A and B Team fits into the system. He also had a great experience at our 1st Team Training Ground meeting the Manager (Owen Coyle) and having the opportunity to see the team train. Jon also did some photos and videos so look out for those on our website soon.

Thanks, Dave
