The Fitness and Football Programme

Football Coaching (Technical)

Each week the students will be coached not only in the complexities of the game but also the simple elements of the game to ensure individual improvement and performance. Simple repetitive practices such as the professionals in the English game take part in will be introduced to ensure the players are focused on all aspects of the game.

All coaching and practical sessions will be overseen and instructed by Bolton Wanderers. Each week the students will receive these coaching sessions by BWFC International Soccer School Coaches. These sessions will expose the students to the highest level of football coaching available in the country.

Stamina & Endurance Coaching

With the physical game in England the students will be coached weekly to build their stamina and endurance to maintain a high level of aerobic fitness. During these sessions and linking to the personal training plan, the students should develop fitness and strength to allow them to compete and increase their physical presence on the field.

What to Expect?

Phase 1
Players will learn how to train while enhancing their technical and tactical skills specific to football. Players will learn the ancillary aspects of warm-ups, cool downs, stretching, hydration, recovery and regeneration as well as mental preparation.

Phase 1 will address the critical and sensitive periods of physical and skill development.

Although competition is invaluable and players will obviously want to win, the main aspect in phase 1 is the development of an understanding of the game.

Players will be involved in a variety of development games building towards Target Matches.

Phase 2
Players will continue along their development path throughout Phase 2 with the emphasis shifting towards training and preparing to compete.

Players will look more in depth into a winning mental attitude.

Player will be involved in development games as well as Target Matches.

Phase 3

This is the final stage of the player’s preparation and the club will have a profile of each player covering his technical, tactical understanding, physical and mental abilities.

Players will still develop through training and playing, however all games played now will be Target matches.

Development Games

These games are put in place throughout the year to develop and improve the students physical and technical skills as well as the students understanding of the game.
These games are not result based and should be played with a “no fear of
failing” attitude. Players are encouraged to express themselves and be creative.
All squad members will be involved if fit and available.

Target Games

Target games look at putting students technical, mental, understanding and physical skills into practice.

Target games focus on the optimization of performance through analysis, feedback and practice.

Due to the higher intensity being placed on the player there are ‘prophylactic’ breaks which help to prevent physical and mental burnout. The ratio to competition-specific training is close to 75% to 25%.

These games are “result based”. There will be no guarantee of game time in TARGET GAMES.

Cool Down Sessions

Following competitive fixtures and high tempo match play activity we believe a thorough cool down session is important to assist in injury prevention. These sessions will involve light training sessions or activities. During these sessions analysis of previous match play as well as coaching to look at improvement will be incorporated where necessary.

Match Analysis

In order to affect our players through coaching we must be able to give them detailed and accurate feedback of their performance.

This accuracy enables us to challenge and improve our players in the right areas. The use of match analysis is what gives us this information helps the coach and team to assess for problems, weaknesses and strengths. The majority of games are ‘Stat analysed in order for the team to see improvements and problem areas.

Filming Matches
Another important tool used here at the Football Studies programme. This helps evaluate team and individual performance, highlight areas of weakness and strength as well as help players evaluate their own performance. It is a very effective tool used in player development.

1v1 Feedback
Once a term players sit down with the ISS coaching staff and evaluate their progress. All areas of the game from technical to tactical and game understanding are discussed. An action plan is then drafted up to help the player develop further.
